Poem: The Taste of Forgiveness

The taste of forgiveness sits on my tongue
Coupled with the bitterness of memories
And the sweetness of the future with another.

It has no flavor,
Still water caught
In the lot between
I don’t care and
I care too much
About the pain you caused me,
A habanero pepper sandwiched
Into sweet, chocolate cake.
Surprise.

I want to erase this taste with that of another,
And feel their lips on mine,
All the time destroying the forgiveness
I had towards you,
Not because I don’t forgive,
But because I want to forget

So I’ll down a shot of alcohol
And let the rum burn it from my mouth
And move on with my life
Without the taste of you on my tongue.
