Poem: Two Inches Under

Close your eyes for me, dear
And remember to breathe
In a desperate acceptance that
You’re still alive beneath
The shallow waters of your
Imagination

I know the two inches of water feel like drowning,
And the pounding in your head is getting stronger,
Lasting longer, growing louder,
But don’t let feelings tower above the reality
That you are two inches under water,
So close to the surface
So don’t slaughter yourself
With the thoughts that you can’t escape.

Lift your head up and take shape
Become who you are,
Drenched
But free
