Poem: Are you depressed or depressed?

When you say you’re depressed,
Do you mean depressed or depressed?
Do you mean sort of sad
Or an overwhelming, knawing, unmoving lack of feeling,
A lack of being in a world where happiness is a mask,
But numbness is reality?

When you say you’re depressed,
What do you mean?
Do you consider that heartbroken
Or frozen in a state of despair at the lack of despair,
At fear of the lack of feeling,
At the lack of humanity
Inside this human shell?

When you say you’re depressed,
Is it simply sadness,
Or an inability to justify to yourself the torture
That is daily reality?

Choose your words carefully.
