Poem: Mama Always Told Me

Mama always told me to keep walking
When a man whistled or waved
As I passed them alone on a street.

Mama always told me to ignore the
 smiles of strangers.

Mama always told me that people are cruel,
People are mean and they are to be
Avoided at all costs.

But mama, aren’t we people too?
And mama, don’t we all start as strangers?
Mama, what if I ignore the one person who could save me?
What should I do then?
